Arrival: Day 1, May 2015

It’s now been about 14 hours since our arrival in New Haven, and so far our time has been very relaxed.   Last night, a Thursday, we took the Red Eye flight from San Jose, CA to JFK International Airport in New York.  It was a five and half hour flight that took us across the country in a single night.  Modern marvel aside, we arrived only slightly jet lagged and were shuttled from JFK to New Haven in a little over an hour.

Arriving at New Haven was a glorious sight to behold.  The surrounding structures reeked of high class architecture.  It seemed that nearly every building was either a castle made up of flying buttresses and gothic spires or an Alexandria-like library that housed all of the world’s knowledge.

We pulled up to our hotel and received our rooms promptly.  Being part of YNI, you get your rooms and (if your district allows) your meals paid for.  Sweet, right?  Over the summer, we’ll be staying in the Graduate dormitories, which look exceedingly fancy, furthering the feel that we have stepped into a realm of royalty.

Despite our baggy eyes, we decided to explore the town a bit.  As a group of nine, we toured parts of the downtown area and campus.  There weren’t too many students on campus and those who were seemed like freshman moving into their dorms for the first time. Downtown, people walked around, looking proper and English.  College students cruised by on skateboards and professors pondered queries in tweed jackets with patches on the elbows. The whole scene seemed something straight out of an east cost magazine.

As we walked around, there was so much to behold.  As stated earlier, the buildings were enormous and medieval looking.  The grounds were well kept and peppered with pretty little flower petals budding out of Spring trees.  There were chiseled sculptures, historical landmarks, and glimpses of underground passageways. One building that absolutely fascinated me was the building of Skull and Bones.  I don’t know much about it yet, but I intend on exploring its lore more fully throughout my time here.  Rumor has it that it houses a secret, elite society that rules the ins and outs of the free world.  More to come on these mysterious puppeteers later.

Around noon, we meandered to one of the many eateries that populated the side roads off campus.  After dining on historical burgers and steadily learning about each other, we split up into two groups to tackle our own, personal agendas. Some people went back to the hotel for a much needed nap.  Others decided to invest in swag so as to rep’ their time at this beautiful university.

By three, everyone was exhausted.  We had explored a sufficient amount of the surrounding area for the day and our bodies were begging us for rest.  So, we went back to our hotel to take naps, shower up, and relax before going back out for dinner later that evening.

As the nighttime approached, we rendezvoused for our second epic meal of the day.  This time, mashed potato pizza was on the menu.  Although this may seem like an odd topping for such a time honored meal, I will say that it was much more delicious that I had expected.  That evening, as we sat together, feeling much more comfortable and friendly, we enjoyed good food, good company, and good times.  Afterward, the group gathered for a final tasty treat, warm chocolate chip cookies and refreshing ice-cream sandwiches, and then went back to the hotel to rest.
